2011-12 Sailing Programme

I must start by thanking Steve Marlow for all of his work over the last couple of years as Rear-Commodore (Sailing). His will be a hard act to follow. I'm grateful especially for the draft programme he gave me: it's so much easier to build on something than start from a blank page!

This year you will see a couple of innovations in our sailing – all Steve's ideas, not mine.

The most obvious is the inclusion of a Saturday series. This will consist of 8 races, starting on 30th April with the first race of the day at 14:30. On 21 and 28 May, these races will be preceded by a race coaching session (to be delivered by newly-trained Club Race Coaches) to help anybody who either wants to start racing or is looking to improve. Many thanks to John Andrews for putting this in place. John Codner and I will be delivering a session on Racing Rules and Tactics on Wednesday 30th March at 19:30; all levels welcome.

This year there will be two Pursuit series – the Jumble Pursuit starting on 20th March and the Summer Pursuit starting on 19th July.

Last year Steve organised a 4-hour race which we ran on a Saturday. It was well-received by those who took part so this year we are going to try it on a Sunday - 11th September – starting at 13:00.

The Cotswold Federation Regatta this year will be hosted by Cotswold Sailing Club on Saturday 9th April. Let's try to get a good number of Whitefriars boats there this year.

We will be hosting 4 Open Meetings this year. Over the weekend of 16-17 April the Laser 2000 and Laser EPS fleets will be here. The British Moth fleet will visit on 12 June, while the CVRDA National Championships will be held over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Normal club racing will still go ahead as usual on those dates.

Have a great season

Ivor Keates (Laser EPS 184)
